Indians leaving India (Including Me…)
Let me start from the starting…. (you can start to already guess my literally skills by now)
I was born in the Central State of India (Madhya Pradhesh). My family moved to Bombay when I was still 4 years old cause of my father’s job. Since then I have groomed myself in a Metropolitan environment. Graduated from a well known engineering college. Got a job as well , with a Pay that could only support my travel expense and lets not miss out the 2 hours grueling travel in the Bombay Locals – where you would only wish the First class compartment has, more first class comfort than a second class compartment. The only upside was that people were little more polished (please feel free to insert your definition in here) and we didn’t have the hawkers cramping the already limited space. Anyways, starting my day at 7 and working till 6 and then repeating the travel was not exactly what I wanted after my college degree (this was about 6 years back from the time I’m writing this). Given the ever increasing population the picture should be a whole lot worse by now. Now I fret about the 20 minutes commute on the Freeway, in my racy car, dressed up in the crisp formal clothesline and listening to the XM satellite radio – we will come back to this a little later.
I forgot to mention that, before I got this job – I had already given my GRE and was very much ahead in submitting my application for all the US universities. This was just get some sense of satisfaction for myself by working in the same field in which I did my engineering and prove myself that my 4 years of hardship is worth something. Well I didn’t like this job and gave up and took up teaching (Yes). I was teaching and prepping candidates for IELTS. An English competency course for folks interested in getting jobs/into education in U.K, Canada and Australia (this was experience on its own account – will talk more on this in my next submission). When I was done with it, it was almost time for me to pack my bags and bid my farewell and head to US of A. I got into a school in Michigan, though I had admits from some Southern universities like OSU (ahem...), but I chose this to be close to more job opportunities in my own field of Mechanical engineering. I got done with my masters in 2 years (more on this again in separate column). I started of working as an Intern in a major German manufacturing firm, on the eastern Michigan side – worked there for 8 months. Got my first ever exposure to the American workers union, and there I got to learn my new side – being the ‘People’s Person’. I saw that how easily I could blend with everyone, right from the plant Manager down to the maintenance man – everyone knew me well – and was liked as well. Learned a lot of things from here - both related to my field and some soft skills which really helped me during the next steps….more to come … in the second part…
